What can I say about Melissa Lee other than that I LOVE HER!!! She is such an incredible force in our diabetes community, always advocating and standing up for the underdog. She is a long-time member and supporter of Diabetes Hands Foundation with her roots deeply planted in the community that she champions, and she has recently become the interim director of the Diabetes Hands Foundation. She is known to the greater community as a blogger and advocate, writing for A Sweet Life online magazine and her own blog, Sweetly Voiced.
Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 10, in DKA and comatose with a blood sugar over 1000 mg/dL, Melissa spent her first 18 years with diabetes feeling alone with the disease. She discovered the TuDiabetes community in 2008 and enthusiastically dived in as one of the first two volunteer admins and later the first Lead Admin. She gives back to the community with her time, talent, and treasure because she credits it with finding the support she needed to get pregnant – twice – and better manage her diabetes on a daily basis.
During our interview, Melissa shares her personal story, struggles and triumphs, and tips and tools she feels best serve her in managing her diabetes day to day.
